Great American Novel?

sawlmw2003

What makes a book a "Great American Novel"? Can you name a few "Great American Novel's?" I though of Mice and Men was considered one, and even though it was an OK book, what made it as "great" as it's title makes it? And finally, who decides which books become "Great american Novel's"?

Answer
Huckleberry Finn
Tom Sawyer

A great american novel is one that shows the "american dream" in one way or another. Often it will portray the vastness and resources of North American, and/or show how a poor person can make it in life. It will contain stereotypical American "identities", and be told from the point of view of someone who has experienced the rights and priviledges of an American.

would someone please recomend a great book on the American Revolution. And i have read John Adams. Thank you?

Answer
Hello,

I can suggest some books for you about the American Revolutionary War. If you've read "John Adams," you might try another by David McCullough called "1776." It's a historical narrative that tells the story of how the colonies defeated Britain and became the United States. David Hackett Fischer is another historian who writes about the American Revolution. I'd suggest his books "Washington's Crossing" or "Paul Revere's Ride."

If you're looking more for historical fiction, Newt Gingrich and William Forstchen have written a best-selling series together about George Washington that include "To Try Men's Souls," "Valley Forge," and "Victory at Yorktown." Jeff Shaara is another to check out; two of his books about the American Revolution are "The Glorious Cause" and "Rise to Rebellion."

I hope that helps you! Your local librarian would also be a great resource to help you find more books on the American Revolution.

Happy reading!
