The Usborne Children's Picture atlas should be written at an appropriate level for a six-year-old.
You might also check out "Children Just Like Me," by Susan Elizabeth Copsey. Although this isn't actually an atlas, it does include much age-appropriate geographic and cultural information about countries around the world and the information is presented in a very kid-friendly format.
If you're looking for an actual atlas, National Geographic World Atlas for Young Explorers is great, but you would certainly need to help the child use the book, as even this children's atlas is not written at a reading level appropriate for most six year olds.

Hi! Im doing a project in my child development class and am looking for a book to use to read to preschoolers, ages 3-6 that would help with the way children develop and be good for them. If you have a background in child development, this would help very much! Thank you!!!
