If I buy an Amazon Kindle now, when the library lending feature is released, will I have to buy a whole new Kindle or can I just update the software so I can borrow books? I really want a Kindle for some summer beach reading, but I don't know if I should wait it out for the library lending to be released as that is the only flaw I see with the Kindle. Thanks!

The library lending feature will be a free software update. I was talking to a local librarian and she confirmed that the local branches are preparing for the update rollout this fall.

Will the Amazon Kindle's new lending feature allow public libraries to lend books to Kindle owners?

No. The lending feature means that you can lend one of your ebooks to a friend for up to 2 weeks. And just like with a real book, you can't access this book while your friend has it... and you can only lend that book to your friend one time.
Libraries technically "lend" you a book, but in ebook terms, it's just called "borrowing" and that is not linked with "lending" to a friend. I'm sure in time this feature will be available.
