For my final exam, I have to put together a magazine about the 1980s. This includes writing a book review, which means I need to read a young adult mostly "school appropriate" book that is set in the 1980s. It doesn`t necessarily have to be published in the 80s, however. It would be great if it shows some of the "culture", etc. of the time. Thanks in advance!
Answer
I have the PERFECT book for you.
Excellence: Sons of Xavier Forever - George Brennan, Jr.
It is actually a memoir that is very funny and a short read about how the author survived the pressures of his teen years while attending the extra pressure of an elite all boy, Catholic, military school in New York City during the 1980's. There are references in the book about music debates regarding 80's music and 80's sports teams. The book captures that decade for sure.

all I can remember is that it had red and green/blue monsters in, they fought at first but by the end of the book became friends. Can vividly remember a big rock being in the story and the monsters were sat either side of the rock. Any ideas?

"Two Monsters" by David McKee (1987)

"simple story of two monsters living on opposite sides of a mountain. Communicating through only a hole, one monster declares that day is departing, while the other firmly believes that night is arriving. After this disagreement, neither monster can sleep, which makes them grouchy and further fuels the argument, leading to a name-calling, stone-hurling, earth-shattering fight. As the monsters' insults get longer, the rocks they throw get larger, and the mountain separating the two is smashed into bits and pieces. For the first time the monsters see each other, and realize the other one just might be right. Together they watch the sunset, giggling over their foolish quarrel. Young readers will delight inand probably repeatthe outrageously silly insults; the clean, crisp lines of the monsters' bodies and the rocks contrast nicely with the subdued washes of the morning and evening skies."
