What's a great book for teenagers?

bambuzelpa

I'm looking for a book that's not about that stupid ga ga teen romance puke fiction. I'm looking for a book that has meaning to it and is interesting. Preferably not in this time period. I'm also looking for a specific book not a list of them. If you could give a brief explanation that would be great.
Thanks!

My favourite book is 'A Spot of Bother' by Mark Haddon. It's funny, well-written and gives a great insight into peoples' minds, but it is set in the current period. Otherwise, I'd suggest 'A Thousand Splendid Suns'. It's about two women living in Afghanistan under Taliban rule, and is almost heartbreaking in some places.

Great travel-related books for women?

EverCuriou

I'd really like to give one of my female friends (American) a book about traveling, but from a woman's perspective. Despite traveling to Europe (i.e., London) once or twice every year for the past 4+ years, she recently had her very first experience being in a non-English speaking country. I think this has really opened her eyes, so I thought it would be cool to try and find her a travel book that might inspire a bit of excitement about discovering new things in familiar countries and/or traveling to new countries altogether.

A bit about her: She's in her late 20's with a bubbly personality that is girly, but not too childish. She's single and a hopeless romantic. She is not very spontaneous and is still a bit hesitant to venture out of her comfort zone, but she has obviously caught the travel bug and is getting better at trying new things.

Sooooo...I'm looking for something fun and entertaining. It could be a fiction or non-fiction work and it would be a bonus if it is sensitive to a female audience. A bit of humor is a must because she loves to laugh. She's spent most of her travel time in London, but she's also been to Ireland and most recently Paris, Brussels, and a couple of other major European cities. I am *not* looking for specific country/city guidebooks.

Any recommendations on books that might suit her?
