Answer
The majority of picture books are geared toward young children, but not all. Nine to twelve year olds should certainly not be reading picture books exclusively, but to say that if they shouldn't be reading them at all is ridiculous, especially at the lower end of that age range. It depends on the student and the book. My daughter is in first grade. She can easily read chapter books from the Magic Tree House series, but can struggle when reading some of her picture books. Why is this? Because many of her quality picture books use richer vocabulary and a more complex and varied sentence structure than many of the books written for early readers. Some of them also provoke more thought in 40 pages than some "early reader" books do in three times that many. Many of the chapter books written for early readers are incredibly "dumbed down", using simple sentences and controlled vocabulary, and I think sometimes there is too big a rush to ditch the picture books in exchange for mediocre literature just for the sake of getting to "chapter books". Shouldn't the quality of literature be more important than the length of the book or whether or not it includes pictures?
Anyway, just make sure you keep in mind the age group. Choose topics or stories that they would find interesting. Increasing independence, changing relationships with friends and the opposite sex, thinking about the future, physical changes in their bodies, and family problems are a few examples of themes that this age group will be able to relate to. Don't dumb down the vocabulary or writing style of the text for this age group. Remember that not all picture books fall under the category of fiction. Some things will lend themselves more readily to picture books. Pictures in non-fiction books can really aid in understanding, so that might be something worth considering as well. Good luck with your project!
