How do you get books from Project Gutenberg onto Kindle Fire?

I feel stupid asking this because it seems like something that should be easy to figure out, but files that I download from Project Gutenberg to put on my Kindle don't seem to want to open. I'm sure there's something I need to download or something but I'm just not sure what. Downloading directly from Project Gutenberg mobile was also a failure...

The files should be in .mobi or .prc format for the Kindle. You should be able to then drop them into the Documents folder on the Kindle.

Is there any good collection or databases of public domain/Creative Commons works?

I'm on a bit of a binge of free things, and would like to know more free books, movies, or music. So if anyone knows of any good websites the has a good database of books (like project Gutenberg), films, games, and music, please leave them here.
