I know about Flowers in the Attic, but I'm looking for more modern books and more specifically about cousins. Either about love, or forbidden love, or anything? Between teenagers is what I'm looking for.

Answer
Okay to Naomi Thompson first off: have you ever read Romeo and Juliet, or are you just trolling? Because they were from DIFFERENT families, and that was the main conflict. But I guess it fits in forbidden love. Yeah sorry Naomi that was kind of mean I bet you're a pretty rad gal. Anyways, Naomi is right. Most stories of forbidden love are some sort of twist on the Romeo and Juliet story. Think of all the forbidden love stories you know: Pocahontas & John Smith (Pocahontas), Neytiri & Jake Sully (Avatar), Maria & Tony (West Side Story), Troy & Gabriella (High School musical). What do these all have in common? Simple: two people from two groups that don't mix fall in love. The tension is whether their "tribes" will pull them apart, or whether their love can bind them together through anything? I gotta admit I only answered this question because I saw the title and before I'd even read the description I thought of "Lolita". Lolita is generally considered to be one of the greatest novels of all time and while it's not exactly about incest, it's about a stepfather who falls in love with his stepdaughter. And, oh yeah, she's 12. I get that it's not what you're looking for, but it's the first thing I thought of. Also: have you ever watched the show "Arrested Development"? Michael Cera (the cutie from Juno) and this other chick play cousins who fall in love. It's a hilarious show (so it's not a drama), but if that's what you're into, you should seriously check it out. Late! And good luck!

Novels for a senior girl heading to college?

I'm trying to broaden my horizons and get some good reads in before I head off to college next year. What are some classic and modern books I should get through?

I've already read and enjoyed books like The Great Gatsby, Angels and Demons, a few Shakespeare plays, Pride and Prejudice, etc. etc.

I plan on reading Little Women, Portrait of a Young Artist, and The Other Boleyn Girl...Are these good choices?

Answer
Little Women is a wonderful book! Do you mean Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man? That's a tough read, and kind of pretentious.
If you're not afraid of length some of my favorites are Of Human Bondage, by W. Somerset Maugham, and Gone With the Wind. The Glass Books of the Dream Eaters is a modern masterpiece.
The Magus by John Fowles is a stupendous novel as well, it really did change my life. 1984 and Brave New World are the best of the dystopian epoch, Great Expectations is Dickens' most accessible work, I love Micheal Crichton's clever thrillers, P G Wodehouse's Jeeves and Wooster, and Agatha Christie, as well as Christopher Moore and Plum Sykes (her books are positively scrumptious!)
Some really great classics (you've probably studied them, but if not, great choices:)
Madame Bovary
Ivanhoe
Crime and Punishment
Death in Venice
The Stranger (Camus)
No Exit and Waiting for Godot, both plays
Vanity Fair
Scaramouch
Anything by Jane Austen
Frankenstein
The Turn of the Screw
The Fall of the House of Usher (and most Poe)
Tristram Shandy
Wuthering Heights
Jane Eyre
The Iliad
The Importance of Being Earnest (also a play)

There are millions more out there. I also love the Odd Thomas series, Neil Gaiman is wonderful, so's Douglas Adams if you like sci-fi and parody. The Lord of the Rings is a class unto itself, and keep reading and, more importantly, watching Shakespeare. Try Marlowe's Dr Faustus too, really a marvelous read and interesting in the huge difference between his style and Ol' Will's!

Good luck at college, make time to read! I know so many people who say they just don't have time, and that's a tragedy. Books are not only a gateway into other worlds, not only the most effective mirror of life, but the best way to improve vocabulary and writing, skills highly valued at school!
