What ebook reader lets you download books from any source?

I've been researching readers like Kindle and Nook, but from what I've read you can only download books from their respective online stores. Are there any ereaders that let you download books from, say, project gutenberg or from a local library website?

Answer
That's not true. First of all, gutenberg.org has the kindle format, so you can put that on your kindle. Kindle supports several formats and those that aren't supported can be converted. PDF documents for example only need to be sent to your kindle email with "convert" in the subject title. You can then download them from there.
There are also apps that allows you to convert to kindle format.

Supported formats: azw, mobi, txt, prc
Can be converted by sending to your kindle email: HTML, DOC (a Microsoft Word file) and the graphic file formats JPEG, GIF, PNG and BMP.
EPUB, LRF and LIT are not supported but free online apps can convert them for you. Amazon may eventually add the Epub format

I don't know about the Nook, but I assume similar things apply.
