greatest books in american history image
Heather
I need a book to do a book report on for my History class. My teacher suggested something on the holocaust., The book has to have something to do with American History. I want it to be something good, i don't want to be bored the whole time i read it. It also has to be at least 200 pages long. I asked him about like the scarlet letter or the grapes of wrath and he wont allow it because those are books we will read in an english class. So, any suggestions please?

If you can read historical fiction, then read The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara--it's a civil war novel that was a bestseller and helped kickstart the whole Civil War popularity trend.
I guarantee you'll love Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry--it's a western.
If you're interested in the Kennedy Assassination, then read Case Closed--that's non-fiction
How about Lies My Teacher Told Me by Loewen
Here's a list of great historical fiction:

The Night Birds by Thomas Maltman
It was a wonderful book set in the mid 1800's in Missouri and Minnesota. There are aspects of the Civil War and the rights of escaped slaves but the story focuses more on the Dakota War of 1862, and really puts you inside a part of history that not many are familiar with. The country was too concerned with the Civil War to pay much attention to the Dakota War in Minnesota so it's often overlooked. The story has aspects of romance and family drama and is just a fantastic read.
Snow Falling on Cedars by David Gutterson is another very good one. It's about the treatment of Japanese-American's during World War II. There is some romance, a murder mystery, and a coming-of-age story all rolled into one book.
Hattie Big Sky by Kirby Larson. It's a book for kids and young adults, about a young girl who attempts to move to Montana and save her uncle's homestead claim. It's a great historic look at how hard the people who settled America had to work to get by. The time period is World War I.
Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen. It's set during the Great Depression aboard a circus train. Romance and mystery. Interesting read thought not terribly high quality.
The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon. Starts out in Prague during Hitler's rise to power, but the story is about New York City and the golden age of comic books. It's a fantastic journey into a different time and place. Romance and action and adventure.
