I have two old rare books i picked up at a garage sale. One is (The English Citizen, Local Government) by M.D. Chalmers published in 1883. I found it on one website for 35$. But couldnt compare it as it couldnt find it any where else. I also have (The world's greatest books vol 1) by Aurthur Mee, which has been reprinted alot over time but my copy was printed in 1910. Is there a good way to find the value of these books?

Answer
I'm going to suggest a couple of other sites: bookfinder.com connects to many different on-line selling venues, so you might have better luck comparing. Checking eBay and Amazon aren't bad ideas either - it will give you some idea about the market for the book.

One of the answerers is right - there are a lot of factors, but it sounds like you know some of this since you mentioned the one book had been re-printed often. I've seen Baumann Rare Books cited on here for info about rare books; I also think there's a place on addall.com to ask questions. Another site you could try is sangraal.com. I'm putting the links below. The last one shows two copies of the book, both under $50, though the first is ex-library.

Good luck!

Why is Wuthering Heights the world's greatest love story?

Why is Wuthering Heights one of the world's greatest love stories?

I read it about, a year ago, but I don't get how it's considered one of the world's greatest love stories.
Maybe I'll have to reread it or something.

Answer
Again, I dont know about the "greatest love story", but it may well be the "strangest". It is a love story no doubt, but there is hardly any love in the book. Those moments of romance and whispering sweet nothings into each other's ears. They are completely unknown in Bronte's world which is full of anger and spite and revenge and unconditional everlasting love.

The characters are completely unique. Heathcliff is a masterpiece. That, I think, is the most unforgettable part of the book. He stays with you long after you have read the book. So is Catherine Earnshaw. Among them, they spoil the lives of their children too.

Thats just one. Then there is the narration. Bronte employs a very simple yet powerful narration. She chooses to describe from a very neutral yet concerened point of view.

All these and many other reasons (I am no great critic) make WUthering Heights an exceptional book.
