Are there any 21st century philosophers worth noting/studying? Who are the "leading" philosophers right now, and why? Are there any ways I could find out; where do I look for that info? Thanks.

Answer
The century is still too young to be able to say which philosophers are noteworthy right now. In my opinion the Quantem Physics guys like Brian Greene and Stephen Hawking are going to be the great philosophers of this century with a sprinkling of people from various fields who aren't officially philosophers but their body of work (be it movies, music,or literature) will stand out given the test of time. Hawking's last book "The Grand Design" is half science and half philosophy which I feel is on a par with Aristotle and any of the characters from history. Philosophers in the historical context it seems have gone the route of specializing in specific subjects which is just a natural response to our sophistication but they won't get much publicity. Also Philosophy doesn't pay nowadays. Daniel C. Dennett is one I recommend. He studies and philosophises about religion and whether it is a natural creation of the mind and he argues for the rigorous scientific analysis of religion to either validate or officially categorize it as a mental creation. He makes an awesome argument actually because science is advanced enough now that we should be able to prove the existence of a divine being through experimental evidence if it exists.

The best recent philosophers were Aldous Huxley and Bertrand Russell in my opinion. They were all about the effects of technology on man and where our world is going to head as technology multiplies. Their books read like they could see the future because they were dead on. Especially Russell's "The scientific Outlook".

What are your favorite books/movies for teaching children business life and capitalism?

Mozart

21st century life is confusing. College majors don't produce financial security. Being unaware of how capitalism works and how the business world works is a hindrance for any one not born with a trust fund.

What books or movies do you feel teach kids about life and business.
And, importantly, the kids will actually read?

Answer
*Whatever Happened to Penny Candy?* by R Maybury is a great book written for ages 11-13 and is interesting and informative even for adults. It gives some historical examples that read almost like a trivia book.

The publisher's website describes it this way-
~ This clearly written book about economics is a remarkably easy and fun explanation of investment cycles, velocity, business cycles, recessions, inflation, the demand for money and more. Essential for every student, businessperson and investor. Recommended by former U.S. Treasury Secretary William Simon. It is also on many recommended reading lists.

The word "essential" might be a bit hyped, but I've read the book and that is a fair assessment otherwise. That link is below, but I've seen it slightly discounted at homeschool conventions.
