What's a good way to start learning computer programming?

Amanda

I'm just wondering where I could find some good resources, books, websites, etc on the subject of computers and programming. This is something I'm just learning as a hobby because I think it's really fascinating. I'm reading a book on HTML/XHTML at the moment, so I'm really just starting out and would like some advice.

Answer
The best way to start learning programming is by reading books on the subject. If you are interested in web development, then the main languages you need to learn are:
-Html
-Css
-Php
-JavaScript

These are the four main languages used for web development. You should learn the languages in this order:
1. Html
2. Css
3. Php
4. JavaScript

Html is the main language used to create a website. There is no question that it must be learnt first. Html is a language for describing the structure of a document, not the actual presentation. There for it must be learnt first because a web site cannot be started without it. After this comes CSS. CSS is a language dedicated to the presentation of a web page. You create Stylesheets (hence the name Cascading Style Sheets) in the head of your web page that define the layout and overall presentation of your web page. Php handles data before it becomes Html. Php is for making a website change according to user input. It deals with databases which provides the webmaster with the opportunity to create login forms and make user accounts, uploads etc. You write a Php script that generates a Html script depending on the actions taken by a viewer of your webpage. Last, but definitely not least is JavaScript. JavaScript is used for making a web page interactive. For example: Embedding videos and flash games, pop up menus, drag and drop systems, time viewing and all the things that fall under this category.

There for, you learn Html and create the structure of your web page and put in images text and everything you want on your webpage. Then you learn CSS and create style sheets to present your website how you want it to be presented. After this, you learn Php and add things like login forms, upoads, comment boxes, purchases etc. Finally, you learn JavaScript and make your web site flashy with videos and games and what ever else you want on there. I will provide you with a list of very good books that teach you these languages.

Now, moving on to programming.
f you are interested in programming, then there are many languages available for you to learn. I will list the main ones, and I will provide details about each language and provide you a list of books for each one.
The main programming languages today are:
-Visual Basic.NET
-C#.NET
-C++
-Java

If you want to start at a very basic level, and create programs and user interfaces as soon as you start programming, you should start with Visual Basic. If you want to spend more time building up a base of knowledge, but be able to make better and stronger programs, you should start with C#, C++, or Java.

What language you learn depends on what you want to do. If you want to learn a language and make programs as a hobbyist, you should start with Visual Basic or C#, depending on the pace you want to go at. If you want to develop flash games and multi platform apps, Java is what I would recommend. If you want to learn a language and start a business, or work for a software company, C++ is what you should go with.

Here is a list of books on these programming languages.
Visual Basic:
-Beginning Microsoft Visual Basic 2010 by Thearon Willis and Bryan Newsome
-Sam's teach yourself Visual Basic 2008 in 24 hours (outdated)
-Sam's teach yourself Visual Basic 2010 in 24 hours
-Microsoft Visual Basic 2010 Step by Step

C++:

C#:

-Head first C#
-C# 2010 all in one for dummies
-Programming C# 4.0

Java:

-Sam's teach yourself Java 6 in 21 days

Now it is simply a, matter of deciding whether you want to do web developing or programming. If you intend to do both, then you should start with web developing.
