There are 2 excellent novels by the French author Muriel Barbery that both take place in Paris. The 1st is "Gourment Rhapsody" which follows the reminiscences of a food critic as he lies dying in his bed. The 2nd and even better is "The Elegance of the Hedgehog" which is narrated by 2 people, the concierge of the apartment building and the 12 year girl whose parents live in the building. The concierge is as her station in life dictates supposed to be a dull soap opera watching slob who spends her day doing the bidding of the snobbish tenets and tending to her cat. But she is in reality a near genius who spends her time with classical music and dense philosophical readings. The girl believes her parents and all other adults are pathetic snobs and decides that she will burn down the building and kill herself on her 13th birthday. With the death of a gourmet critic (the same from "Gourmet Rhapsody") an new tenet arrives and he along with the girl begin to suspect that the concierge is more than she appears and they decide to help her free herself from the shell she has built.
This is quite simply an outstanding novel in all respects.
