"Into the Wild" by Jon Krakaouer is the first that pops into mind. It's about a 24-year-old guy named Chris McCandless who one day donated all of his money to charity, abandoned his family and began hitchhiking in order to get to Alaska. He died there from hunger. It's absolutely heart-breaking and a highly interesting book - wonderfully written.

Historical nonfiction book?

Shikkah

I need to read a historical nonfiction book for high school.
It needs to take place between 1945 and present day.
It needs to be an analysis of a particular event or time period.

Some examples we got were:
Polio: An American Story
Nixon and Mao
The Cold War: A New History

Any others that you can think of?

Eleni by Nicholas Gage is a *great* book set in 1948 about the communist takeover in Greece. It has a good story, but also plenty of history. In it the author talks about his own experiences during the awful civil war there, and particularly the actions of his mother. It's positively heart-wrenching.
