My brother loves to read but I can't seem to find him a book series, do you have one?
Answer
Apart from the obvious - Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling - I would have to go with A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket.
Harry Potter
- 7 books;
- start out easy for children to read but become gradually more adult-level-reading because original fans of the series would have grown older as the books were being published
- while humorous and fun, they are well written and also deal with deep issues
- despite what some people might say, the books also teach good moral values such as the importance of love
A Series of Unfortunate Events
- 13 books, as well as The Beatrice Letters and The Unauthorized Autobiography
- each book is the same reading level, which is about 9-12 years of age
- again, these books are humorous and fun, but also deal with some deep issues
- some like that the books teach children words and expressions that they would not normally know
- the humour might be considered "dark", but I found that the dark humour helped me get through a time when I was going through a very unfortunate event myself ... I will always love the books for that

My son loves to read the Pokemon books. I can ask him what he is reading and he has no problem telling me.
However, when I went to the school conferences, the teacher stated that when he reads at school he does not have a good comprehension of what he just read.
I need to help him improve his comprehension. His skill level is that of a second grader, average. Does anyone have any suggestions that could spark an interest in improving his comprehension without it seeming like more homework?
It is not my intention to make him stop reading Pokemon. I am too liberal to engage in censorship. I wanted to find other books that would excite his desire to read. I want to increase his comprehension ability without killing his desire to curl up on the couch and read a book. I am "old" a "mom" and kids think old mom things are boring. LOL!
