Is "The Great Gatsby" a good book to improve English vocabulary for a non native speaker ?

SAMP playe

Is it good enough ?
I'm also reading The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli, is it any good ?

Answer
"The Great Gatsby" is well written in American English in the 1920s. Some expressions in it would seem strange in Britain.

"The Prince" was originally written in an old form of Italian, about 500 years ago. There have been several translations into English, some have concentrated on a style of English close to the historical, some have tried to use modern English; I do not know which sort of translation you are reading. Possibly avoid such historical books, concentrate on books written from the start in modern English, thus look for books written after about 1960. Also try to get hold of good newspapers or magazines in English.

which are the great english books which one shouldn't miss?
