Please help! I need a book that is interesting, one I cant put down, etc in order to write a book report for my US History class. It could be a biography, but preferably an exciting book about anything having to do with important events in US History.

The Night Birds by Thomas Maltman
It was a wonderful book set in the mid 1800's in Missouri and Minnesota. There are aspects of the Civil War and the rights of escaped slaves but the story focuses more on the Dakota War of 1862, and really puts you inside a part of history that not many are familiar with. The country was too concerned with the Civil War to pay much attention to the Dakota War in Minnesota so it's often overlooked. The story has aspects of romance and family drama and is just a fantastic read.
Snow Falling on Cedars by David Gutterson is another very good one. It's about the treatment of Japanese-American's during World War II. There is some romance, a murder mystery, and a coming-of-age story all rolled into one book.
Hattie Big Sky by Kirby Larson. It's a book for kids and young adults, about a young girl who attempts to move to Montana and save her uncle's homestead claim. It's a great historic look at how hard the people who settled America had to work to get by. The time period is World War I.
Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen. It's set during the Great Depression aboard a circus train. Romance and mystery. Interesting read thought not terribly high quality.
The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon. Starts out in Prague during Hitler's rise to power, but the story is about New York City and the golden age of comic books. It's a fantastic journey into a different time and place. Romance and action and adventure.

What are some great movies or books about history?
Saramllas
I'm looking for movies or books that tell a story about history. I don't mean movies that only tell facts or history books.
Some examples of movies that I really liked are: The Boy in the Striped Pajamas and Fat Man and Little Boy.
I also like interesting documentaries like Fahrenheit 9/11
Also, suggestions of any books or films that are educational in some way would be appreciated
Thanks everyone!

The best book I ever read also is a book of history: W. Shirer; Berlin Diaries - The Journal of a Foreign Correspondent 1933 - 1941.
Shirer was an American CBS Radio correspondent reporting "live"from Berlin and all major European cities before and during the war (time for broadcasts was every day midnight due to the time shift), from a Christmas Party on a German submarine and the Winter Olympics in Garmisch Patenkirchen.
He was invited privately on Goehring's parties and often clashed violently with the Nazi censors, often winning the fights. By his profession and the old technology of short wave radio requiring short and precise sentences the book is incredible good to read, almost funny. Shirer is very sarcastic about the Nazi leaders whom he had to follow on every step. He also joined the German side on the Polish and French campaigns and is the only quasi neutral observer ever of those events (the USA were not at war with Germany at that time).
For the fist time a had an idea what in the teaching of history is fact and what is fiction
