The whole olympics in Beijing has just sparked an interest in Chinese history for me! What a beautiful culture, any books with the most descriptive information on China, which would you recommend?
And for Persian too, meaning by the whole Islamic nation, the traditions, everything about it!
Answer
Good introductory books are Patricia Ebrey's The Cambridge Illustrated History of China. It's illustrated and easy to understand.
Follow that with Jacques Gernet "A History of Chinese Civilization" and "The Search for Modern China" by Jonathan Spence.
These books are solid academic works, at times a bit dry but they are the foundation readings for most Chinese history majors.
Good popular books are: Foreign Babes in Beijing by Rachel DeWoskin; anything by Frank Dikotter; The Man Who Loved China by Simon Winchester.
If you are interested in Persian history in addition to Chinese, I would highly highly recommend books about the Silk Road and Xinjiang region of China. Persians interacted with other peoples (Chinese, Arabs, Turks, Indians, Greek, Sogdian Tibetan) in this area and it has a rich and fascinating history and beautiful art that reflects both an East Asian and Middle Eastern/Mediterranean influence.
Books about the Silk Road: "Xuanzang: A Buddhist Pilgrim on the Silk Road" by Sally Wriggins, "The Silk Road: A History" by Franck and Brownstone, and "Life Along the Silk Road" by Sally Whitfield.
