Goodness, that's a tall order. Well, there's bound to be a couple of peole who will say Twilight, so I'll suggest the top books currently on my list:

TWEAK: by Nic Sheff. True story about the author's continuing struggle with his meth addiction. A companion book is out by his father, David Sheff, about a father and how he deals with his son's meth addiction. The father's book is called "A Beautiful Boy" (it's a Starbucks feature).

THREE LITTLE WORDS: by Ashley Rhodes-Courter. True story about the author and how she went through, like, twelve foster homes in nine years. Terribly horrifying how the foster care system works in the country, and rather interesting.

GREAT AND TERRIBLE BEAUTY: by Libba Bray. The first in her "series," it's about a girl who is sent to a boarding school and discovers she has magics that have gone untapped till her arrival at the school. There are three books out at the moment, and to be honest, I like the first one the best.

THE THIRTEENTH TALE: by Diane Setterfield. Beautifully written, wonderfully creative story that turns out to be a mystery toward the end. The language is rather pretty. It reminds me of "Never-Ending Story" for older readers.

SNOW FLOWER AND THE SECRET FLOWER: by Lisa See. Albeit this is an adult book, I think young adult readers will enjoy this. It's a poignant love story, but not the kind of love story that's usually written. Instead it's about the love between best friends, set in China when footbinding was the norm (blech; the process is described in the book and it's gross). Great writer.

SKIN HUNGER: by Kathleen Duey. This was a National Book Award finalist and for good reason. Duey is primarily a paperback, not-so-serious author who has made her debut in the big leagues with this book. It's two stories told in alternating chapters, which I would normally hate. However, Duey makes it work. It's a fantasy story about magic, about how it's being banned but secretly taught, and I honestly was mad when the book ended because I couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen in the second book.

Enjoy!

Great young adult books?
