Between 1981 and 1984 I lived in South Africa, and my mother bought me some books I would love to find, but I can't remember their titles or who wrote them.
The first is a set of books, about A4 in size, hardback and very slim. The stories I remember are one about some giant stones that could move about, because I think they were really giants. The other one was about a pygmy hunter chasing some boars. The books had very beautiful artwork that took up the whole of the page. Very fantasy orientated books.
The second set were 3 little books about A6 size, they were the tales of some little animals living in a wood. I remember they were cooking mushrooms over an open fire. I think one was a hedgehog, one may have been a squirrel or a rabbit. Similar probably to Beatrix Potter, but definitely not her books.
Sorry for the lack of detail about the stories but it was such a long time ago, and the books were left behind when we moved back to the UK. I've tried every book search facility on the web, but no joy. Any info greatly appreciated.

Isn't that the most frustrating thing, battling to find books that you had as a child and not remembering the name. I am also from SA, and would love to find books I had as a child in the 70s. I can visualize the graphics, but the name, aaaargh, :(
Try to narrow it down, by considering the following:
1. If it was in the early 80s, then those books may have been published in the 70s or earlier, so limit your searches to earlier times.
2. South Africa was a closed/small market, so it was always behind the international published dates.
3. Censorship board had to peruse most/all publications that came into SA, so there must have been a register to say which publications had been approved. Don't know though if children's books had an exemption.
4. Books in SA in that time may have been more likely from the UK authors/publishers/printers, followed by the US - if not from one of the SA publishers of that time.
5. Try one of the SA second-hand websites such as www.loot.co.za
6. If you visit SA, then visit the second-hand or charity stores. They often have old books.
