Q. I'm looking for a list of novels that feature horses as the main character (like Black Beauty) and/or about girls and their horses. My niece has recently gone horse-crazy and I am looking for some gift ideas for her birthday. She reads at a 6-7 grade level.

What are some good books for advanced 5th grade reader?
Q. My daughter loves, loves to read. I recently had a meeting with her teacher who said she was very advanced for her age and she reads at a 7th to 8th grade level which is great but the only problems is that she likes to read books that are not in her academic range she likes junie b.jones, diary of a wimpy kid etc... I looked at books that's at 7th to 8th grade level but they seem a little to advanced for a 10 year old, Boys, boobies, makeup, and cliques which she is not into yet. So what are some good book for an advanced 10 year old reader?? Are twilight and new moon good books?
Answer
Twilight and New Moon are horrible books. Unless you want her to go into a downward trend from this point on where all she does is dream about her soon-to-be supernatural, perfectly dark and on-the-edge-of-killing-you boyfriend, then no.
At her age she'd probably be interested in fantasy. I remember a book I read was called Ingo, it was about 6th grade level, I think. I'm in 8th grade now, but somewhat of a more active reader than others, but here are some books I think she might like -
Time of the Eagle, Sherryl Jordan - fantasy, about a girl from a tribe who unites others in her land to defeat the supremacy of a kingdom whose leader is corrupt and wants to crush them.
I remember reading Princess Academy by Shannon Hale in 6th or 7th, I think she'll like that - it was about a girl who defied a headmistress or someone for unfair treatment. Goose Girl is also by Shannon Hale, and I would also recommend Book of a Thousand Days, by the same author - but not Enna Burning or River Secrets (by Shannon Hale), because I don't think it was as good and it contained quite a bit of stuff about burnt bodies - maybe a little disgusting for a 10 yr old.
Books about the world of Avalon by T.A. Barron I really liked in 6th/7th grade, they're kind of silly for me now but she might like them. There is some humor for younger readers she might appreciate, and the books are somewhat thick and many in a series (just make sure you start on BOok 1, I'm not sure which it was) and it takes place in the magical world of Avalon with many different mythical creatures.
What about Spiderwick Chronicles? I remember a lot of kids liked them in 5th/6th grade.
The Uglies series (can't remember the author) was very popular especially when it was just released (7th grade for me). The series is Uglies, then Pretties, and Specials - science fiction genre in a futuristic world, again the Main character is a girl - she defies the authorities and finds out about their corrupt ways hidden from the public - meant to be for the common good, but possibly not always so.
