I have a 45,000 word book about a medical student who is raped by three people. His family retaliates by murdering three random people and the government comes in and assassinates the family while covering up the murders and replacing the executed with government agents. Where can i publish this? Is 45,000 words enough? I want it to remain short so that people can receive the message about government corruption and the ethics of the death penalty more than the little things.

Here's a great place to start, since there are many self-publishing companies and they're not all equal:

If you want to be published by a major book distributor, I'd recommend picking up the book "The Writer's Market" and looking for literary agents who specialize in your genre of fiction. Most major book companies (and most minor ones) will only accept books submitted to them by agents and finding an agent is actually a lot harder than writing a book. But "The Writer's Market" is an invaluable resource, especially for beginning writers who are unsure how to market their products. It's updated annually, so most of the information is current and reliable. Here's a link to that:

Graceling by Kristen Cashore
Summary;Graceling takes readers inside the world of Katsa, a warrior-girl in her late teens with one blue eye and one green eye. This gives her haunting beauty, but also marks her as a Graceling. Gracelings are beings with special talentsâswimming, storytelling, dancing. Katsa's Grace is considered more useful: her ability to fight (and kill, if she wanted to) is unequaled in the seven kingdoms. Forced to act as a henchman for a manipulative king, Katsa channels her guilt by forming a secret council of like-minded citizens who carry out secret missions to promote justice over cruelty and abuses of power.
Fire by Kristen Cashore
Summary; Here there are monsters, enhanced and exceptionally beautiful versions of various animal species. Fire is a human monster, so beautiful that she has to hide her hair for fear of attack by both raptor monsters and human men. She is able to enter other people's minds and exert power over them. It is a tumultuous time in the kingdom, as various lords are preparing to overthrow the king, and Fire is drawn into the fray. Readers will fall in love with her as she struggles with her pivotal role in the war effort as well as her complex relationships with her oldest friend and lover, Archer; with Prince Brigan, whose mind is closed to her and who becomes central to her life; and with her monster father's fearsome legacy.

Mistwood by leah cypess
Summary; For centuries, the kings of Samorna have depended upon the immortal Shifter for protection. When the Crown Prince Rokan ventures into the Mistwood to find the Shifter, she again allows herself to be caught, to be tamed, and to be tangled into the deception and danger of the human court. The Shifter is uneasy, though. First she woke with no distinct memory of the past and now she finds that she is unable to change shape. As she adapts to palace life and painstakingly hides her inability to embrace her past abilities fully, she seems to become more the Lady Isabel as she is known in court, unwittingly displaying human emotions and hesitating in her bound duties to the crown. As Rokan becomes king, he is thrust into danger, seemingly from all sides. Isabel learns much more than she bargained for as she hunts among courtiers for conspirators and finds her loyalties divided. This story unfolds gracefully, mirroring the slow path Isabel must travel to begin understanding herself and her place in the world.
