I see a lot of stuff on television and the news about Mexico and the drug war. I'd like to read more about it, something real and gritty.

I'm looking for sci-fi novels. please don't mention books of other genre, especially romance. I abhor romance novels.
I've read most of Orson Scott Card's works, and a lot of Isaac Asimov's too. I've read Brave New World and Cat's Cradle and Bernard Werber's works and probably a couple more I can't remember. I'm thinking of reading Man Who Folded Himself next. So you kinda get the idea...generally old-school and preferably down-to-earth. I think authors listing meaningless techy jargons every paragraph to sound sci-fi smart is a major turnoff. Thanks in advance!

NPR recently released an excellent list of of 100 science fiction and fantasy novels, chosen by poll:

To separate their sci-fi recommendations from the fantasy, try this fun navigation guide:

Citing from this list, works qualifying as 'old school' include the Niven, Heinlein, Philip K. Dick, Ursula LeGuin and Arthur C. Clarke. If you appreciated Brave New World, definitely try George Orwell. H.G. Wells and Jules Verne actually predate 'old school'.
