I am homeschooling my son who is 5. recently I discovered he actually likes me to read him longer books. So before bed I started reading him Charlotte's Web. he loved it. So we finished it last night & then tonight he asks me what book I have now...LOL Ummm none. :) I just hadn't anticipated that he had the attention span for a story read to him without pictures yet. He doesn't *appear* to have that attention span when reading books with pictures. :) Normally he wants to talk about the pictures & comment & interrupt & ask questions. It was remarkable to me how much more engrossed he was in a longer more complex storyline. I think I may have been boring him with short stories. :P
Does anyone have any recommendations on any good books for a boy that age for chapter reading?
Answer
How about Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or James and the Giant Peach. Those type of books require more concentration and encourage the reader to imagine the pictures. Those are two nice classics. Here is a link to classic chapter books at about that comprehension level:

Some of course are more geared at girls, but they're all great books.

For her to start reading or to read to her?
Have a look at this site at the childrens books for ideas
www.fishpond.com.au
www.borders.com
Here is some great titles to read to her...
The magic wishing chair- Enid Blyton
anything else by Enid Blyton
Goldie the Sunshine Fairy- Daisy Meadows
All the similar Daisy Meadows titles are excellent as well.
Dora's Fairy-Tale Adventure- Christine Ricci
Then there is classics like Cinderella, The Story of Rumpelstiltskin, Little Red Riding Hood, Sleeping Beauty etc.
My favorites were also Mem Fox books like Possom Magic.
Jeannie Baker wrote where the forrest meets the sea and that was amazing. um also Pamela Allen, who sank the boat.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle was also another fave!
Happy reading!
