Advice on beginning Zen meditation?

Chris

I'm looking at getting into zen meditation, but I don't have the time to take an actual class or really join any groups. Does anyone have any advice on how to do this solo? Any books to read or sites to visit? Thanks in advance.

The book "The Myth of Freedom" by Choygam Trungpa helped me immensely in understanding the ego and the mind and how meditation is actually a tool for discovering how your own mind works. Most of us are so busy moving that our minds don't have time to just reach a zero state where the mind is free to roam where it wants.

Trungpa likened meditation to a bull wandering in a field. You have the bull on a loose tether so you can gently bring him back, but you are actually giving that bull a chance to be itself.

Best way to start is to count breaths - 10 minutes morning and evening to start - work up to 20 minutes.

Do it for 3 to 6 months before you decide about it. It can really change the way you perceive yourself and others.

Good luck, my friend.

what is the official book of zen buddhism?

maria

this is still for my daughter.

Answer
There is no official book of Zen Buddhism. Traditionally, the teachings were imparted orally from master to student, and because each master taught differently, there became many different variations on Zen practice.

There are a few books that I would recommend for someone that wants to learn about Zen. The first is "Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind," by Shunryu Suzuki. It is a practical guide to Soto-style Zen meditation. The other is "Zen Flesh, Zen Bones." It is a collection of koans and Zen stories that can give great insight into Zen.
