Vegetarianism?

I have recently switched to being a vegetarian about 4 weeks ago. My mom has been really worried that I'm not getting the nutrients I need. I don't take any vitamins or supplements and want to know what I should be taking to make-up for my lack of nutrients.

If you're eating well, you don't have a "lack of nutrients."

Every nutrient the human body needs is available on a vegetarian diet. Google the vegetarian food pyramid to see how much you should be eating from the various vegetarian food groups. That will get you started.

You should also check out "The New Becoming Vegetarian" by Brenda Davis and Vesanto Melina. Both of them are registered dietitians and their book is pretty much the bible of vegetarian nutrition. It should alleviate your mother's worries.

Done right, vegetarianism can be MORE healthy than a meaty diet, not less. Vegetarians are less likely to suffer from cardiovascular disease, stroke, hypertension, elevated cholesterol, kidney disease, type II diabetes, and certain types of cancer than are the general population.

The best resource I've found is in the podcast, "vegetarian food for thought." It's better than any book I've read on the subject, listening to a podcast is easy and enjoyable, and it's free for download. You can log onto the iTunes store, search "vegetarian food for thought" and download the episodes for free. Each episode is sorted by title and subject, and so you can easily find and listen to whatever subject you want to learn about at the moment.
