I need an Easter basket filler and my son needs new books. The problem is, he doesn't like chapter books (yet) but the books he's choosing are too easy and boring for him.
Does anyone have some suggestions for a boy who loves animals- marine life especially, science, sports, technology, and environmental issues... that are not chapter books. (Or, if they are, have lots of pictures to fool him.)
Thank you!
Who am I, he's in 1st grade. I think that probably has something to do with him not being interested in chapter books yet. That's my guess anyhow.
Thank you, all, for the suggestions!
Love the random house link. Thanks, again!

The Magic School Bus books are *very* popular among the first grade boys in my daughter's class. They fight over the same ones every week. :-) I'm not sure what the reading level is, but they're definitely harder to read with complicated science concepts.
He may enjoy Mercy Watson books or Nate the Great. They're a bit simpler than 4th grade level, but they're fun reading. And with Nate the Great, he can try to solve the case as he reads.
Check out the AR Book Finder at www.arbookfind.com. You can search for books by a variety of criteria including reading level to see what you find.

AR book suggestions for early 4th grade level?
Michelle
My daughter is having a very hard time finding interesting books on her grade level.
She enjoys the Magic Treehouse series and the Fudge books by Judy Blume. She also likes to learn about different breeds of dogs. - She is interested in history, but we have a hard time finding history based books that she can enjoy.
Any suggestions? We want books that she can get AR points from ( http://www.arbookfind.com/default.aspx ) , preferably in the 3.7 - 4.5 level. - The closer to 4.0 the better.
She did wonderful earlier this year. But now that she has devoured most of the books we thought she would enjoy from the library, her grades and enjoyment level of reading are falling.
Jenn and Favorite - Thank you for the ideas :) Some of those books sound familiar. I will see what I can find at our local library. They are still in the process of labeling what is AR, so it's a chore to find a stack of books that my daughter is interested in in hopes that one of them will be AR. (we write down the non-AR books to come back for summer reading)
Anna - My daughter has also went through the age-appropriate books in our house. She really enjoyed the ones from my childhood! I tried to find more of my old favorites at the local library, but their selection was VERY limited. *sigh* ... Good thinking though. I have a couple of 5th grade books set aside for when she gets a little better at reading.

Does your school have on-line access to the full AR test list? There are over 100,000 titles there, and we've found very few books that my daughter chooses that aren't on the list.
If your school is not subscribing to the full AR list, then you'll have to go through the school's list of AR tests and focus on those within the AR level you are targeting.
One suggestion, though they are longer books and might be a bit of a challenge for your daughter is the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan. It's a mashup of "Magic Treehouse" type adventure with the Greek Gods, set in current time. It's a big favorite with kids these days.
If they are a bit too hard, then try the A to Z mysteries (Ron Roy), Hank the Cowdog, and the American Girl series (Samantha, Kristen, Felicity etc.).
Have you read the Little House on the Prairie series by Laura Ingalls Wilder yet? Again, just a bit above the level you've suggested, but these really aren't that hard to read.
