Can you recommend some good picture books that I can read aloud to 5th graders?

I love Patricia Polacco's books. Books that tell powerful stories ensconsed in social issues/historical events. Great artwork is a plus as well. Something along those lines would be nice. But perhaps a different author?

I would read I am SAM. By Dr. Sues. It's not a "5Th", graders book, it's the point behind it. Our English teacher read it to us when we were in "11" grade. In turn we had to write a paper on it. I would find book with description of sites, places, etc..
This way it will get them into the setting of the book and enjoy hearing or listening to it. The most of all if you read the book to them, you have to play the part. I remember our teacher reading a book about chocolate or fudge something. I don't remember much but what I remember is how he read the book and showing us how much books have to offer. Literacy is a big issue for us in the US, I would take a look at the bigger picture then just worrying about picture books. This should have already been instilled in them when they were in Kindergarten and First grade. Good Luck.

What books are good for 5th graders?

My little is in 5th grade, and she doesn't know what to read. All she reads is Harry Potter. She says it's getting boring, but she doesn't know what to read. She likes fantasies, fictional books, informational books, and novels. And she also reads books that you should read ahead of her grade, so include 6th grade books too please!

She should read Warrior Cats (Warriors)! Amazingly awesome! Jam packed full of adventure and suspense I have to say I'm thirteen but started reading them when I was 11 or twelve and they are super great. The one thing I would say is that it's important to read them in order and the thing is there are so many of them that it's important that you start from the start. The first one is called - Warriors - Into the wild. Check out the authors site which tells you about the book and what order they go in and stuff.

I love Harry Potter myself, but i guess I can understand that at certain points it can be a little boring, but trust me, She will not get bored with Warrior Cats!! It's a real page turner - but it's important that she learns to stick books out because they usually always get better as you progress further into the book. I would recommend these books to a friend and I'm trying to get all my friends to read them. Warriors sounds like the kind of books she would love, SO definitely check them out. Don't hesitate!! :D PEACE, good luck :P
