Book suggestions for a 5 year old girl and 7 year old boy?

Mrs. C.

My sweet niece is 5 years old and while at my house the other day she asked me if I had any books...I don't have kids so I don't have kid's books. I want it to be a surprise so I don't want to ask her mom what to get. When I asked my niece what kind of books she liked, she said "Hannah Montana." But from what I have seen, Hannah Montana books are way beyond her level. I want to get some cute books that I can read to her and she can work on learning to read.

Can anyone give me some suggestions of what your kids enjoy? I also have a 7 year old nephew, if you can help with him too!!

Thank you!
Asw - she is my niece and I know her reading level. Maybe YOU were reading at a higher level, but she can't read chapter books yet. I'm trying to help and encourage her. Geez...

Thanks for other answers!!

I'd suggest looking at some Newbery and Caldecott Medal and Honor books. These are children's books that have been given an award for either their story or illustrations, which generally means that they are quality stories. They're pretty safe bets for books that appeal to a wide audience and will be a bit timeless. The older books are just as great as the new ones.

Book recomendations for 9 and 5 year old boys?

Hannah

I'm trying to get my boys to enjoy reading. They love anything gross (bugs, farts) and silly. My 9yr old really enjoyed the diary of a whimpy kid series. My 5yr old loves the David books by David Shannon. Oh! Anything Halloween-esque would be great also!

Answer
For the 5 y.o.boy:

the Fly Guy series by Tedd Arnold - funny, large print, and hilarious illustrations; even my girls loved these books! http://www.shvoong.com/books/children-and-youth/1896047-hi-fly-guy/

the Teacher From the Black Lagoon series by Mike Thaler - scary/funny; love the illustrations http://www.shvoong.com/books/children-and-youth/1895908-teacher-black-lagoon/

the Elephant and Piggie series by Mo Willems - silly and fun to read http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_0_19?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=elephant+and+piggie&sprefix=elephant+and+piggie%2Caps%2C334

For the 9 y.o. boy, here are some EZ to read chapter books that include illustrations:

the Franny K. Stein series by Jim Benton - mad scientist; very Halloween-esque!! http://www.shvoong.com/books/children-and-youth/1894116-franny-stein-mad-scientist/

The Strange Case of Origami Yoda / Darth Paper Strikes Back by Tom Angleberger - very funny! these chapter books are a bit longer, but they have cool illustrations similar to Diary of a Wimpy Kid series http://www.shvoong.com/books/children-and-youth/2078258-strange-case-origami-yoda/

How to Train Your Dragon series by Cressida Cowell - made into movie, but the books are great for boys; illustrations like the Yoda and Wimpy books http://www.shvoong.com/books/guidance-self-improvement/1977258-train-dragon/

I hope these suggestions help your boys learn to love reading. Good luck!
