I'm going through one of my mad bookworm phases and I really want to explore a variety of new genres and styles. Out of curiosity, what are the 5-10 books that you cherish and recommend to family and friends? The ones that have affected you deeply, and have changed your outlook on life?

I also really love quote books, so if you know of any good titles, please list them.

Thanks so much, fellow bibliophiles! : )

My former English teacher is a fascinating, attuned, and skillful educator who used "bibliotherapy" as a means of helping teens navigate through the challenging high school years and make voyages of self-discovery, and the books I read that year she taught me did profoundly help me.

The Song of the Lark ~ Willa Cather
As soon I read the title I felt like this book was beckoning me to read it, and throughout the journey I vicariously embarked page-by-page, I was perpetually amazed and astonished by how much I felt like a kindred spirit to the protagonist, Thea. It chronicles her ascent from being a bohemian, outspoken girl who nurses her emotional wounds through reading and writing, to a plucky, determined teen who moves to Chicago and finds inspiration and purpose for her life through art, to a young woman in a manâs world who perseveres and becomes a world-class opera singer. Theaâs artistic and spiritual awakening prodded me to view my own talents in a new light, and inspired me to use my art more purposefully. She taught me how to use my singing as a vessel to connect my body, mind and spirit and with nature, and encouraged me to be in an endless pursuit of beauty.

Pride & Prejudice ~ Jane Austen
Elizabeth Bennet is another heroine of mine for her wit, moral courage, and optimism.

Saturday ~ Ian McEwan
I almost gave up on this book because the first few chapters snailed along, and I couldnât identify with the middle-aged protagonist, but then it sucked me in and kept me captivated. I appreciate this book because it challenged my views of the Iraqi Invasion, and more importantly, taught me to peel back the layers of complex issues from multiple angles instead of merely accepting the skim on top served up by the media and public opinion.

Don Quixote ~ Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra
âOne man scorned and covered with scars still strove with his last ounce of courage to reach the unreachable stars; and the world was better for this.â

I also was positively impacted by:
Three Cups of Tea: One Manâs Mission to Promote Peace ~ Greg Mortenson & David Oliver Relin
The Poisonwood Bible ~ Barbara Kingsolver
The Lovely Bones ~ Alice Seybold
Atlas Shrugged ~ Ayn Rand
The Hours ~ Michael Cunningham

The Picture of Dorian Gray ~ Oscar Wilde
The Great Gatsby ~ F. Scott Fitzgerald
A Doll's House ~ Henrik Ibsen
The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay ~ Michael Chabon
The Awakening ~ Kate Chopin
One Flew Over the Cuckooâs Nest ~ Ken Kesey
On the Road ~ Jack Kerouac
Venus in Furs ~ Leopold von Sacher-Masoch
The Alchemist ~ Paulo Coelho
The Color of Purple ~ Alice Walker
Fahrenheit 451 ~ Ray Bradbury
Death of a Salesman ~ Arthur Miller
Brave New World ~ Aldous Huxley
Mrs Dalloway ~ Virginia Woolf
The Time Travelerâs Wife ~ Audrey Niffenegger
Life of Pi ~ Yann Martel
The Girl with the Pearl Earring ~ Tracy Chevalier
White Oleander ~ Janet Fitch
Paint it Black ~ Janet Fitch
The House of Fog ~ Andre Dubus III
The Tenth Circle ~ Jodi Piccoult
