Might anyone know any good books or websites about researching politics for political novels?

I'm in the midst of writing a novel with world politics involved, and rather than spending 3 years doing useless research, I'd like to have some guidance in how much, and what kind of research I should be doing. I know the field of politics varies, but what I'm looking for mainly deals with the interactions between countries, things such as the European Union and North Atlantic Treaty Organization and how they interact with other countries. I hope my question was not too confusing. Thank you!

If I were you, I'd probably check with a good reference librarian at a local university. They should be able to point you in the right direction and give you great sources. Then I'd fill in the gaps with information I'd get on the internet - like NPR radio shows or specific journals or websites.

Know next to nothing about the world/politics. Where should I start reading to get informed?

I'm 16. My interest in reading good books has turned into an interest in current events. What magazine/newspaper/whatever should I subscribe to and what are some good books to start reading up on?

Answer
I would recommend reading the weekly news magazines like Time and Newsweek. National Geographic is a great monthly magazine that covers more obscure issues that you would not see in the other mags.

As far as a news source I recommend NPR and PBS. These are viewer supported and have no interest in being biased because ratings is not what determines the content.

Next get a library card. All of the above mentioned sources will mention books that cover the subjects they are talking about in greater detail. With a library card you can get a lot of books without breaking the bank.
