I am kind of a new reader, alchemist is the firsrt book i've read without it been a school assignment (turn 23 in a couple of days). I want to read more so if the book do not grab my attention early i will never finish.

Where can one buy famous books translated into foreign languages?

Q. for example - The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, i wish to send it to a friend in Germany & another in Holland. I'm sure this book is better read in ones main language but I can't find them online?
searching google and amazon is hopeless!

Answer
I'm assuming that you're looking for The Alchemist translated INTO German and Dutch, not the text translated from Portuguese to English. (Sorry I'm confused; in this book's case, English is a foreign language too.)

When you use google or amazon, the easiest way is to search for the translated title. If you're not sure what this is, often an author's official website will list all available translations and the titles in the new language (this is important as sometimes the titles are completely different, particularly if it's an idiomatic expression).

The German title is "Der Alchimist" and can be found on Amazon at http://www.amazon.com/Alchimist-Paulo-Coelho/dp/3257065582/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1283030877&sr=8-1 However, if you're sending them one in Germany, you might get it directly from amazon.de and the shipping could cost less for you. Just go to that site and search for the title in German. Yes, the site is IN German but it looks exactly like the English site in every way so you can know what you're looking at, and in a pinch you can use an online translator to copy and paste text to double-check (it'll be garbled but you can decipher it).

Here is a site where you can purchase "De Alchemist" in Dutch: http://www.bol.com/nl/p/nederlandse-boeken/de-alchemist/666760687/index.html Again, the site is also in Dutch but I believe it is IN the Netherlands so shipping should be less.

But frankly, it's best to read the text in a translation as close to the original language as possible. If neither of your friends read Portuguese or Spanish, a French translation would be much better than either German or Dutch, if either of them read French. The title is "L'Alchimiste" in French and you can find that at many Amazon sites.

Hope this helps! I frequently have to buy foreign language books and I know how tough it can be to find them.
