Is there any source out there that is nationally recognized and reliable that gives a list of the greatest books ever written? Not just some NY Times author's top 10 list! Please include a link if you can!

Where can i find a list of the scariest books ever?
I have searched yahoo and google and found nothing. Any help would be great!

By searching 'scary books list' I got lots of hits on Google. That said, be aware of the fact there is no definitive list; people will offer their opinions, and what one person finds scary another may not. A lot of classic books were shockers for their time - today, they are pretty tame. Other people like gross, but that's often not scary. The scariest books' moments I recall are things from early Stephen King - scenes from the bigger picture.
One final thought - to me, the ultimate horror novel is "Johnny Got His Gun" by Dalton Trumbo. It's for good (mature) readers only as the whole story takes place in the main character's head and involves flashbacks. As I said earlier, others may not find it of any interest.
