I'm looking for some books that 5th and 6th grade boys and girls will like. Can anyone help me out?
Answer
If a book is well-written, then both boys and girls will enjoy reading it. Fantasy, adventure, and books with humor should appeal to both. Here are my suggestions:
Kiki Strike: Inside the Shadow City by Kirsten Miller - on the Today Show on NBC, Al Roker featured this book on his book club. Both boys and girls gave it great reviews!
The 39 Clues: the Maze of Bones - mystery adventure that's fun to read
The Key to Rondo by Emily Rodda - good fantasy book
Al Capone Does My Shirts by Gennifer Choldenko - funny!
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne - fabulous book, now a major motion picture

How do i get my 5th grader to try harder in school?
luvmykids0
My 5th grader is an okay student and a great kid. He doesn't get in any trouble in school and is generally a quiet kid. He has problems getting organized, no matter how much i try to help him. He is going into middle school next year and needs to try more. Give me some advise on what i should do. I have taken video games, tv and other things away to try to get him to study and even when we go over it together he gets to school and its like he never looked at he book even though we did. Help
Answer
my first question would be why isn't he trying harder. Does he get on with the teacher. Is he being bullied at school . Is he sitting to close to a good mate. Its no good looking for a solution to his lack of motivation without knowing the cause. Don't give him bribes or you will be doing it for the rest of his life.punishment is only good if he is doing something wrong and in the classroom its up to the teacher .Speak to your child and then the teacher. Try to make a plan with both . Only use short term goals. Just remember he is only in fifth grade. Also have you had his hearing and eyesight checked.Good luck with him. If doing his school work is the only problem you have with him your doing a good job and so is he
