I need to think of some policies that have been major contributors to the historic drop in the crime rate in the United States since 1990. Anybody know any policies that have done that? I'm just looking for ideas that I can research. Please help me, thanks!

An interesting answer to this question was touched on in Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner's book "Freakonomics" whereby they discussed that in fact the biggest factor that contributed to the falling crime rate in the 1990s was the legalization of abortion in the United States some 20 years earlier.

Levitt argues that mothers who would have raised unwanted children who then would have gone into crime did not give birth, and so the number of potential criminals reduced, thus reducing the crime rate.

Its beautifully simple, I'd check out the book for your assignment. :)

Will Obama fix the illegal immigration problem by providing a pathway to citizenship as he proposes?

Democratic Platform:
The American people are a welcoming and generous people, but those who enter our country's borders illegally, and those who employ them, disrespect the rule of the law. We need to secure our borders, and support additional personnel, infrastructure, and technology on the border and at our ports of entry. We need additional Customs and Border Protection agents equipped with better technology and real-time intelligence. We need to dismantle human smuggling organizations, combating the crime associated with this trade. We also need to do more to promote economic development in migrant-sending nations, to reduce incentives to come to the United States illegally. And we need to crack down on employers who hire undocumented immigrants. It's a problem when we only enforce our laws against the immigrants themselves, with raids that are ineffective, tear apart families, and leave people detained without adequate access to counsel. We realize that employers need a method to verify whether their employees are legally eligible to work in the United States, and we will ensure that our system is accurate, fair to legal workers, safeguards people's privacy, and cannot be used to discriminate against workers.

For the millions living here illegally but otherwise playing by the rules, we must require them to come out of the shadows and get right with the law. We support a system that requires undocumented immigrants who are in good standing to pay a fine, pay taxes, learn English, and go to the back of the line for the opportunity to become citizens. They are our neighbors, and we can help them become full tax-paying, law-abiding, productive members of society.

The illegal alien population of the U.S. is about 20 million - roughly the population of New York State.

Between 4 and 6 million jobs have shifted to the underground economy since 1990. These are not "jobs Americans won't do, but rather jobs Americans used to do.

On the revenue side, the United States may be foregoing $35 billion a year in income tax collections because of the number of jobs that are now off the books.

There are approximately 5 million illegal workers who are collecting wages on a cash basis and are avoiding both income and FICA taxes.
The United States is hooked on cheap, illegal workers and is deferring the costs of providing public services to these quasi-Americans.

Obama has been the Illinois Senator for enough years to have done something, anything, to correct the many problems Illinois faces today because of so many illegals in our state. Why would he be any different as President? He talks a big, smooth talk...
How can we do the best we can if we vote for something we don't believe to be right for our nation? Why do we settle for partial rights and wrongs?

Answer
he doesn't care and it's not a popular subject now.

Rememer when he used to talk about prison reform and never mentions anymore. He'll do NOTHING when or if he gets the job.

He's a total hypocrite and cannot tell the truth...and he compares himself to all these great men. Would he just tell the truth?
