I want to learn about the Marine Corps history more now that I am a poolee in the DEP. Any books that I can buy and where to buy them would be great to have. Thanks!

Answer
Joseph,
great question. I am placing several links below for you to consider on the books I have read and the fascination of the Marine Corps legends.

The first book is on one very telling Victor "Brute" Krulak ~ his son would later become Commandant in the 1990s.

The second is "Helmet For My Pillow" by Robert Leckie and is quite telling.

The third should likely be your first read entitled "Chesty" by Colonel Hoffman (USMC - Retired) and is a very objective account of the storied life of our most beloved General.

The fourth is on the son of Chesty Puller; one Lieutenant Lewis B. Puller, Jr. I met this man in 1987 before his book became published. I'm still heartbroken over his loss of life ~ an amazing story of one very important Platoon Commander.

The fifth as recommended by "Yankee Sailor" above me is "Goodbye Darkness". A most important memoir of a highly esteemed author who also wrote "American Caesar: Douglas MacArthur 1880 - 1964" http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_1_15?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&field-keywords=american+caesar+by+william+manchester&sprefix=american+caesar%2Cstripbooks%2C160

Last and certainly not least is the History of Marine Aviation ~ the interwar years between 1919 and 1941 were very important for both U.S. Naval and U.S. Army Air Forces development. In addition to this I would suggest you see a film made in 1935 that opened to theaters in the US with a "mixed crowd of emotion" that starred Jimmy Cagney and Pat O'Brien ~ this would be movie #2 of 9 they would make together and the title was "Devil Dogs of the Air". Pay attention to the Naval aircraft in the movie ~ it truly represents an era gone by. Here is the bio on the movie: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0026275/ The movie would open up again in the summer of 1941 and this time the National fervor was VERY apparent and in some ways re-catipulted Cagney and O'Brien's movie careers all over again for the second time.

I hope this helps and TU to Yankee Sailor above me ~ thank you for the continuous good reference to "Goodbye Darkness"; you are truly and admirable American.

Semper Fidelis!

What is best, most unbiased book about 1990s Bosnia war?

Daria

What book discusses the players and the events of the 1990s Bosnia war from most objective perspective? Not propaganda about blaming this side or that. A book that details what happened and why. Recommend best sources, please?

Answer
The books I have indicated you in one of your prior questions are by non-Yugoslav authors... Dianna Johnstone, John S. Schindler and David Gibbs are from USA... There is a very good youtube link to Noam Chomsky about Yugoslavia... I doubt it can get more objective than that, even if that means tilting the blame toward a side... Of course, there should always be space for a critical approach to any study on the issue.

Perhaps the book you are looking for of David Gibbs:

http://www.amazon.com/First-Harm-Humanitarian-Intervention-Destruction/dp/0826516440

Gibbs being a leftist does not make his thesis on the neo-liberal market as western motive, less objective :)

Another objective angle could be dug from certain non-government German sources, but I doubt there is translation. The universal general rule is to stay away from official, government sources ;)

There is also a good Czech, German and Russian documentary on Kosovo you can find on youtube. The famous BBC documentary on the fall of Yugoslavia IS biased...

Did you read my comment on your last question?
