I'm selling my much beloved Honda. Don't want to, but have to. I've had it for 10 years and has never left me stranded. It was stolen recently and suffered severe cosmetic damage; but it still runs great. Kelley Blue Book lists it, in fair condition, at $945. I'm selling for $800 or best offer. What would you pay for a car like that?

Answer
You didn't mention what the severe cosmetic damage was... Unfortunately for used car sellers (and I always have 4-5 cars, I just sold two in the last month), the used car market is just flooded with so many cars. It's absurd how many cars there are for sale, but if you look at your local Craigslist page each day and see the number of new cars that are on there every few hours, it is very surprising. That said, a car that has "severe cosmetic damage" will be one that will be exceedingly difficult to sell. If it has something special about it that makes it more enticing, that could be one matter, but otherwise, I'd think closer to $600 honestly. There are so many cheap cars on the market that cars that have problems have to sell for very cheap. I've bought cars that had problems such as needing a new transmission for prices that were ridiculously low because the original owners either couldn't afford to make the fixes or didn't want to invest that kind of money into them. Then, if I make the repairs, I can instantly sell the car for more than the purchase price + repair price.

Why is the Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass such a great book for the literature canon?

I am a college student that had to read Frederick Douglass' book, A Narrative in the Life of Frederick Douglass an American Slave. For our final we have to write a paper on why the book is so great. I need help coming up with reasons. Why is it such a great book, and why is it on the Literature Canon book list?

Answer
FD is what may be termed an "overcomer," someone with the sense of victory. Such is not remarkable in the White community (Emerson, Twain, Dickinson, et al.); in the Black community, such clarity has been rare, so his work stands alongside the insights of Emerson, Twain, and Dickinson, in terms of self-liberation, self-realization.

FD is no different in terms of quality than Emerson, Twain, and Dickinson, but while the latter are remarkable for their insight, FD is remarkable for the same qualities, as the 19th century Black community in America produced no other writer and lecturer of similar quality.

A similar 20th century American, in a different field, was Eric Hoffer, a longshoreman who wrote insightful books http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Hoffer Interestingly, his successor is often said to be Thomas Sowell, an African-American http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Sowell
