How do I market my own book without financial backing?
I am working on a book which is autobiographical in nature that means everything to me and has great marketability. The only hiccup is that through my research of the process of publication, any notable house will expect you to handle book promotion. How do I make myself and my book known nationally with a meager investment? Is it possible? Do you have to be rich already to have a bestseller?

A majority of publishers have a certain amount of promotional resources available to first time authors.
---They will submit Advanced Reading Copies to reviewers for you as well as get quotes for your cover copy.
--- They will advertise the book in their own catalogue which goes out to both independent and large chain store book sellers. As well as librarians.
--- They will also send out a box of free copies to you. Take your copies and submit to contests unless they will do it for you. Also ask them first if they will send out copies to reviewers that are not on their list before sending one of your freebies out (some reviewers will ask for three to five copies as contest giveaways and gifts for themselves considering they don't get any other monetary reward).
--- You should get yourself business cards and a website which can cost you something but almost everything else can be done with little to no money. You can offer to do booksignings at your local bookstore and library and schools. You don't get paid for these appearances. But you need to make sure you sell books. Go to your dollar store and stock up on little knick knacks and for every purchase let a buyer select a gift this way they feel like they are getting something 'more' than just a book. Also put together a basket and have buyers fill out a little card with an e-mail address and name. I've done interviews and live chats and writing workshops as my avatar. I experienced a second wave of sales through virtual promotions as I meet people from all over the world.
There are some little things you can do at no cost to yourself. As you go along you will find that there will be other events you attend where you can make yourself, book and status as an author known. Depending on the issues of your work you may have a not-for-profit who schedules you to speak on their behalf as well as lead workshops within the group to help them express themselves through written word or go out as a speaker. I do that for a cause though I am not someone who suffered the problem they faced they enjoy working with me because I am a 'fresh' ear to them. It is tax deductible as well.
