Trying to find the name of a childrens/young adults fantasy book from the 90s?

I'm dying to re-read some books I read as a kid, but can't remember the name and was hoping someone could help.
It was a trilogy of books about some kids (possibly related) who went to live to live in the country. They discovered they could enter the minds of animals, like rats and foxes, and talk and travel with them, I seem to remember some big battle at the end as well.
I know that's slightly vague but if anyone has any ideas, please let me know!!!

What is the name of the book where the main character drinks six packs of beer by himself in a graveyard?

It may or may not be required reading in middle or high school. I read it i middle school and i cant think of any other details of the book besides he was a trouble maker at school and would throw cherry bombs in the toilets. It kinda remided me of the book Tex by S.E Hilton but less well known I guess. Any help would be appretiated. 80s or 90s book I think.
