Hey, I'm writing a book for grades 5th to 8th, and I was wondering about how many words are there in a typical young adult book? A paperback, 120 pgs?

Your book age range (10-14 years old?) of 5th to 8th grade straddles middle grade and young adult so I would say 40,000-50,000 words would be about right. YA is usually targeted toward 13-18 year old readers and those novels are around 50,000 to 80,000 words.
Usually middle grade books have slightly larger print and YA are about the same as adult font size.

My son wants to become an author, and he is writing a book for grades 3-5. How much words should it be?
So far, he has written 5,109 words.
My child is writing a chapter book, just a heads up. And he's writing a book for grades 3-5 NOT ages 3-5.

The best way to figure that is that the number of pages in a book is based on 250 words per page. So if you are looking at 100 pages, multiply that by 250. The best answer, and the answer that I always give, is that the correct number of words for a book is the number of words it takes you to tell the story. After you are finished and have an editor, choose one who works with children's books. They will know better how to tailor the story for the appropriate age group and make cuts and changes accordingly. For now, just write the book until the story is told. Pax - C
