Would you consider The Kite Runner a great work of fiction?

As compared to great works of the last century like Grape of Wrath, East of Eden, For Whom the Bell Tolls?
Ninety-two years from now, will the Kite Runner be on Time Magazine's list of the 100 best works of fiction in the 21st century?
Answer
The Kite Runner is the author's first fiction attempt, and his inexperience shows. Although he shows a lot of promise, the book is heavy-handed and gets bogged down a lot. In the second half of the book, there are some coincidences (such as running into childhood enemy - who just happened to have the child he was seeking) that strain credulity.
Or when his lip is split - immediately bringing us to compare that with Hassan's - the author can't let us work that out for ourselves; he has to point it out, as well.
As I said, heavy-handed. There is much beauty, but this one isn't a great work of fiction and won't be a classic. Some of his others may be. The first half of Kite Runner was terrific, by the way.
If you want to read a book that is astonishing and flawless, pick up The Remains of the Day. Beautiful story, and much more subtle.
