I just started working as a preschool teacher. They are mostly 3 and 4 years old. When I read them stories, I find myself changing some of the words in the book to easier words that the children would understand. Even though the books are for children, I feel that they may not know what I am saying, if I read the longer, more complicated words. Is it wrong to change the words? Should I be reading what's in the books, even though the children may not understand the words yet?
Answer
In my opinion it is not "wrong to change the words" ... but, what I would say is why?
You may just be surprised by just how much they do understand - and one of your roles as a Early Childhood Educator (ECE) is to extend the children's learning. By introducting new words and vocabulary you are promoting language and learning.
If, when reading a book, you come to a big word (or word you might otherwise change) say that word... at the end of the sentence go back... say "I noticed a really big word in this story... does anyone know what _____ means?" this opens up communication and sharing of ideas which is all part of their learning and part of the story!
