What would you all say is a great book about just life and what lifes all about. Nothing to extremely complicated to follow im still only 16, but I love to hear opinions and be open minded. For anyone thats seen the movie into the wild, I love the opinions made in that movie. Any suggestions are fine ill check them out!!!

There are many great books about life in general:

Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom: It tells the true story of Morrie Schwartz and his relationship with his student, Mitch Albom. Both the film and the book chronicle the lessons about life that Mitch learns from his professor, who is dying from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. Also look into the 5 People you Meet in Heaven by the same author.

For motivation and guidance, check out the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. Sounds boring, but it isn't bad.

For inspiration and success, the Secret by Rhonda Byrnes.

For a story sort of similar to Into the Wild, try Life of Pi (the main character explores the issues of religion and spirituality from an early age and survives 227 days shipwrecked in the Pacific Ocean with a Bengel tiger)

I haven't seen into the wild, so I can't comment on that.
It's great you want to read about life right now :) Keep it up!

Why is the Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass such a great book for the literature canon?

Chealsea W

I am a college student that had to read Frederick Douglass' book, A Narrative in the Life of Frederick Douglass an American Slave. For our final we have to write a paper on why the book is so great. I need help coming up with reasons. Why is it such a great book, and why is it on the Literature Canon book list?

Answer
FD is what may be termed an "overcomer," someone with the sense of victory. Such is not remarkable in the White community (Emerson, Twain, Dickinson, et al.); in the Black community, such clarity has been rare, so his work stands alongside the insights of Emerson, Twain, and Dickinson, in terms of self-liberation, self-realization.

FD is no different in terms of quality than Emerson, Twain, and Dickinson, but while the latter are remarkable for their insight, FD is remarkable for the same qualities, as the 19th century Black community in America produced no other writer and lecturer of similar quality.

A similar 20th century American, in a different field, was Eric Hoffer, a longshoreman who wrote insightful books http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Hoffer Interestingly, his successor is often said to be Thomas Sowell, an African-American http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Sowell
