The book was a series of short stories that were really strange, like the TV show Around the Twist. One of the short stories was about a kid who lived on an island alone with his Dad, and he started growing extra sets of fingernails receeding from his fingertips. They grew all over his body and then he realised he was actually some weird fishman. All of the stories were twisted and strange like that. The book was really big in the early 00s and was in most primary school libraries.

Answer
Seems like it's one of these two books by Paul Jennings-- there seem to be stories about fingernails in both, though, so either it's the same story printed in both books, or he wrote two different ones. Take a look at the covers and see if they ring a bell.

Unbearable! More Bizarre Stories by Paul Jennings

"It was unbearable. Lehman stared at his hands. The nails had grown up his arms to his elbows. His legs were covered too. Toenails grew up to his knees. It was unbearably weird."

Covered with Nails: and Other Stories to Shock Your Shock Off! by Paul Jennings

"Among the eight weird and wild short stories featured here are the tales of a parakeet that returns from the dead; a boy who has a near-lethal foot odor problem; and a chicken that has experiences a bizarre past-life experience."

What is the title of this young adult book?

Todd

I read this during the late 1980s or early 1990s. Possibly purchased through a Scholastic catalog sale. The plot involved a boy who, after an accident, fell into a coma and found himself trapped in the afterlife or a sort of limbo. There he teams up with a girl and a man who had been dead since neolithic times (either a caveman or a neanderthal). Together they travel the land of the dead and try to get the boy back to his life.

Answer
That sounds like something out of a Terry Pratchett novel. He wrote a lot through the 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s and is still writing to this day.
