Legal question about quoting information from books?

Lisa

If you create a for-profit website and you quote information from various books, do you have to pay a royalty or anything?

Answer
There are legalities. You must accurately credit the quotes. Where you run into trouble is when you are using the quotes to support your cause when it isn't the position of the author. There are often disclaimers you are required to put up stating that quoted information does not constitute support of your product. It is often best to contact the publishing company and discuss what they will and will not allow.

**CAVEAT** I have 1-2 users that intentionally troll my answers to do nothing but automatically rate my answers with a thumbs down regardless of how accurate my answer is. In addition, I feel I need to add that my answers are NOT LEGAL advice and contain information easily found through Internet research. The unauthorized practice of law is defined as giving legal advice and/or representation TO CLIENTS, which Yahoo Answers fails to form a client/attorney relationship. Paralegals are not licensed to practice in any state, nor are regulated by any legal body. Registration is only applicable in few states. Please do your research and know more about the paralegal profession before accusing anyone of committing UPL or ignorantly stating that a paralegal license (which NO US paralegal has) or education can be revoked.
