Authors have no control over turning their books into films, or every book produced would have a movie based on it.
Writers do not call up film companies. THEY call the writers.
Writers who do call the film companies are seen as cranks. You literally have to know someone in most cases. If Steven Spielberg was my second cousin on my great uncle's side I *might* have an "in."
Film companies watch the New York Times Bestseller lists to see what books are the hottest, then they might turn them into a film. Mid-list writers (the greater majority out there) hardly ever get a film deal, producers wants something that will sell tickets.
I've got 23 books sold. Two of them in the last 20 years were optioned for filming for one year each. That means the production company had one year to find backing to turn them into films. They didn't. I kept the money, though, a whopping 50.00 each.
If you want to be a novelist, then write. If you want to be a script writer, then write.
But keep in mind that vastly more novels are published than films are produced.

Questions on books being turned into movies?
WildThing
When a book is made into a movie can extra lines and scenes take place? Suppose the book was too short and the director add a few more lines between characters. Does he have to consult the author of the book? Plus, does the author get to pick out the cast for the characters? They do need to look like their characters and the author knows best right? How much can the author direct?
In a book, in once certain scene, a boy and girl are going on an adventure but they barely say anything to each other. In a movie, it has to be more interesting can they add more lines?
*Why am i asking? Cuz i'm young and bored with life
Answer
There are many factors that can take place.
Books are great to read, however, movie scenes can be removed, added or changed.
IF you noticed, most movies will say "Based on..." which essentially mean that the movie is not a direct adaptation of the book, but a movie that uses the similar or same storyline.
If they are planning on using the works of an author, they do need to consult with the author for obvious reasons.
How much work does the author play in the casting and producing is up to the agreement between author and movie company.
Lastly, ever noticed that there is always a screenplay writer?
They do the movie version of the book with all of the changes included.
