Answer
Well, the first step to writing the world's greatest book: ditch the idea of writing the world's greatest book. I can tell you from experience that your writing will suck if you set out doing it with the goal of "I'm going to become rich and famous". That very, very, very rarely happens, and most authors have a day job in addition to their writing. They way you make the world's greatest book is by not caring about any of that and writing for the sake of writing, because it makes you feel fantastic inside like no other thing can. Write what makes you happy to write, not what you think other people will be happy to read. Writing for others is a surefire way to get bored with your project, and that's definitely no good.
As for ideas and the process, I have to say that all of my best ideas have come from dreams that I've woken up and wrote down in a notebook. They're just dreams that grabbed me, and I kept thinking of them throughout the day, about who these characters were and what their pasts were like, etc. I couldn't shake them from my head, and before long I had a rough story hammered out. I made several plot charts and revisions of those plot charts, many character maps and all of that stuff I like to do, and from there began writing. For the actual process, you just write as much as you can when you can until you're done. Don't go back, don't worry about quality, just get your words out on the page. If you go back and edit, you'll get stuck. Just think of it as making a cake. The first draft is setting all of the ingredients out on the table, the second is combining them and making sure they all mix well together, the third is just keeping it on the path of looking pretty and melding together, and by the fourth everything's combined and you're just making sure everything looks extra beautiful. Of course, that's an analogy that won't work for everyone; I know people that do sixty drafts and still aren't happy. I usually find my home right around five and then I have to drop it for my sanity.
Just remember: have fun. Never ever forget why you're writing as long as you're writing for the right reasons. Don't stress; words are beautiful and no matter how much crap you think you put out onto the page it will always be art. And most of all... good luck. ;)

Greatest book ever written?

aperson

Yeah, i realize how it's impossible to choose one because it is about opinion, and is different for everyone, yadayada. So don't bother posting anything if your going to just talk about how pointless and futile it is to select a greatest book.

But what do you think is the greatest book ever? Not, "what is your favorite book?" What is the greatest book? The difference is that you don't have to like the greatest book ever, it doesn't have to entertain you. This should be judged soley on literary value: how well it is written, how it has affected the history of literature.

Only novels. List the greatest, and any runner ups. If you have a best poem, play, non-fiction, post it also.
Harry Potters great. Its probably the 343rd greatest book ever written. But not really number one material.
