Whatis a good Great Books (classics) to read like the odyysey and illaid , and History of rome?

Angel

I am interested in reading the Great Books (classics) but I want one that will improve my vocabulary and increase my intelligence. Specifically I am looking for a nice Great book about philosophy. I am also interested in one that will further my knowledge in math and science or history. I am not talking about classic books from like the 50's 60's 70's I am talking about books like the Odyssey, the praise of folley, on the nature of things, and Institutes of Oratory.

Answer
Here is a great list of the most influential books ever written, a history of thought from ancient times:

My suggestions, both available online:

Philosophy - Plato, The Repubic

Science - Copernicus, On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres

Great political books?????

If I wanted to get a sense of your political views, what books would you choose?
Basically, if somebody disagreed with your views, what books would you tell them to read?

Answer
That would depend on what particular views were in dispute.

I think the only reason to suggest a book about political issues is to document claims.

I would not care to refer people to propaganda, which is generally the basis for written political essays and diatribes of a political nature.

It would be in general more reasonable to present a history of human mass behavior and some realistic views based on scientific inquiry unrelated to politics that might explain that behavior.
