Does your state (if you are in the US) require specific subjects be taught? Do they require you to use comparable texts? It isn't necessary to buy any books if you don't want to!
When mine were in 3rd grade we did math, English, science, history, you know, the basics. We did a lot of art with the history and language arts. My kids did use books for math, but we never bough a science or history book until much older (high school). Probably English either if I remember correctly, it was a long time ago they were so young!
Are you starting now, or next school year? Learn your laws, and figure out what would work best for your individual child, not what worked best for us.
If you do want books, try starting with bookfinder.com It will list lots of sellers, some new, some used. Amazon.com will be listed as used, which is a good place.
If you live in a state that allows home schoolers to use school materials, you can borrow their books. But, isn't that just replicating the classroom in your home?

Answer
Some books I liked in third grade are(I'm a 7th grader)
-Dragon rider this is a long book but it's a very good book I read it in 3rd grade
-The tail of desperado I liked this book too
-Any thing Judy Moody this a fun third grade book
-Geronimo Stiliten i don't know how to spell the last part. I recommend this book out of all of them. It's very fun to read. It a series book but it doesn't have to go in order.
